The instant center is where the linkage vectors intersect. It’s an influencing factor in pedal bob and braking characteristics. The Optimized Instant Center system is designed to provide an optimal migration of the Instant Center through the range of travel.
The Instant Center is designed to move from a point near the height of the middle chain ring, to a point near the bottom bracket - this produces good pedaling performance close to the sag point, while eliminating the influence of braking on the suspension performance.
The shock rate of this system is tuned to be slightly progressive (rising rate). This allows shocks to be easily tuned and used in a variety of riding situations. The linkage system is designed to produce a travel path that gives the bike a neutral ride quality - the suspension will not compress or extend under pedaling loads. Pedal feedback is also kept to a minimum.
